Lars S. Kloster Laid to Rest On Tuesday

Funeral services for Lars Severin Kloster, 62, who passed away from a heart ailment on Saturday evening, June 21, 1947, at 7 o'clock in the evening at the Northwestern hospital in Minneapolis, Minn., were held Tuesday afternoon, June 24, 1947, at 2 p.m. at the Fjeldberg Lutheran church at Huxley, with Rev. O. C. Hellekson officiating.

Weir Birkestrand, Jr. a nephew, sang two solos, "The Lord's Prayer" and "Abide With Me," with Miss Ruth Olson, accompanist, at the piano.

David, Joseph, Orville and John Birkestrand, John Berhow and John Sheldahl, nephews of the deceased, were the pall-bearers.

Opening prayer was offered by Rev. Helleckson. Rev. Karl Lundgrebe, the pastor of St. Peter's Lutheran church at Garnavillo, Iowa, where the Kloster family attended church during the two years they lived there, preached the sermon. His text was from St. John, 11th chapter, 25th and 26th verses. "I am the resurrection and the life; the that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live; and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believeth thou this?" Rev. Landgrebe also read the following sketch:

Life Sketch

Lars Severin Kloster was born June 13, 1885 on the Severt Nass farm southeast of Huxley to Anna and Anders L. Kloster. Shortly after Mr. Kloster's birth the family moved to Huxley and he attended the public schools there. Mr. Kloster was confirmed and became a member of the Fjeldberg Lutheran church. From 1902 until 1908 Mr. Kloster attended Luther college, Decorah, Iowa, completing preparatory school in 1904 and receiving his B. A. degree in 1908. He did graduate work at Des Moines University and Iowa State college. Following his graduation he taught at North high school in Des Moines and later served for five years as Superintendent of schools at Huxley.

Mr. Kloster was married to Martha Annette Birkestrand on June 13, 1913. To this union were born three children, Alexander Luverne, Marion John, and Jeanne Anne. In 1914 Lars was elected Clerk of the District Court in Story county where he served for six years.

From 1921 until 1943 Mr. Kloster was engaged in sales work in Des Moines. In 1943 he became Supt. of schools in Harpers Ferry, Ia. and in Garnavillo, Ia. the following year where he served for two years. In 1947 Mr. Kloster taught school in New York Mills, Minnesota. For a period of four years preceding his death, Mr. Kloster's health was failing. Although for a week before his death Mr. Kloster was forced to rest, his condition did not become serious until the day of his death when he was taken to Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis, Minn.

At 7 p.m., June 21, 1947 Mr. Kloster passed away at the age of 62 years eight days.

Mr. Kloster is survived by his wife of Minneapolis, Minn., his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Alexander L. Kloster and his granddaughter, Alverna, of Knoxville, his sons, Marion J. Kloster of Minneapolis, Minn., his daughters, Miss Jeanne Anne Kloster, of Iowa City, his aged mother, Mrs. Anna Kloster and two sisters, Mrs. A. M. (Carrie) Severaid and Mrs. Lorents (Hilda) Osa, all of Seattle, Washington, a sister, Miss Sina Kloster of Nevada, Iowa and many other relatives and friends. His father passed away November 25, 1916.

Memorials

The floral tributes of esteem were many and most beautiful. Besides these, many donations by friend and relatives were given to "Missions," to the Organ Fund" and to the "Building Fund," in memory of the deceased.

A donation for the purchase of the "Resurrection scene" for one of the stained glass windows of the new church, was given by the immediate members of Mr. Kloster's family, in memory of the husband and father.

There were donations by individuals and organizations of the St. Peter's Lutheran church at Garnavillo, in his memory. These donations were sent by them to the "Home for the aged" at Strawberry Point, Iowa, to the "Lutheran World Action" and to "Wartburg College" at Waverly, Iowa.

Burial was made in the family lot in the Fjeldberg cemetery, south of Huxley.

Gave Tribute

Rev. Gerhard W. Lokensgaard, pastor of Central Lutheran church in Des Moines was in attendance and gave a tribute to the deceased and brought a comforting message to the family, preceding the final rites at the cemetery, which were performed by Rev. Hellekson.

Relatives and friends were in attendance from Rockford, Illinois; Patterson, California; Minneapolis, Minnesota; from Des Moines, Slater, Cambridge, Roland, Randall, Madrid, Nevada, Garnavillo, Hubbard, Ames and other places.

His mother and sisters from Seattle were unable to be present.
