Funeral Services Held at Zearing For Popular Boy
Zearing, July 2--Hugh Richard Good, better known as Dickie, was born Sept. 9, 1929 at Zearing, the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Good, and passed away June 24, 1942, at the Iowa Methodist hospital in Des Moines at the age of 12 years, nine months, and 15 days having been afflicted with diabetes since he was seven years old. He was cheerful and always had a word and smile for everyone. Dickie never complained about the lot he drew in live and he was never known to complain when ill. Even when asked at the last he told his mother he was all right.
Dickie spent his entire life in the community, having many friends, both young and old, and a host of playmates. He was a member of the eighth grade and interested in all school activities. His little boy ambition was to have a paper route. He had just secured the Nevada Evening Journal route but became ill on Thursday before he was to start on Monday. Even though very young he had a great sente of patriotism and was often hear singing "You're A Grand Old Flag." Dickie had planned to spend his vacation in Waverly with his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Jones.
He leaves to mourn his death his father and mother, sister, Maxine and brother Bobby; four grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Johnston and Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Good, all of Zearing; three aunts and five uncles and many other relatives and friends. We will miss the pleasant smile, the cheery word and helpful hand.
Rev. Mark Scott conducted the services at the Church of Christ where Dickie attended Sunday school. Pallbearers chosen from school and playmates were Billy Brown, Billy Moon, Sammy Oakes, Bobby Herndon, Warren Dean Golly. Dickie's school class attended in a body. The singing was furnished by Carroll Bailey, Eldon Crain and Max and Glenn McBride, with Mardean Joyce at the piano.
The many and beautiful floral offerings were cared for by Mrs. Lucille Johnson, Miss Clara Clatterbuck and Mrs. Lucille Brown.
Interment was in the Zearing cemetery.
Those attending from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Jones of Waverly, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Vanderpool of Indianola, Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Wilson of Newton, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Good of McCallsburg, Mr. and Mrs. Selmer Good of Union, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Good of Fort Dodge, Mr. and Mrs. S. B. White of Runnells, Ben and Byron White of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. George Collette and Mrs. Tom Myers and Mrs. J. H. Evans, all of Marshalltown, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Bartholomew of Clemons, Mr. and Mrs. R. E. McIntosh of Colo and Miss Gertrude Vanderpool of Indianola.
