Auestad Funeral Was Held Sunday

Slater, Nov. 10--Funeral services for Haktor Iver Auestad, were held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mr. and Mrs. M. S. Heggen and at two-thirty o'clock at the Bethlehem church. The services were in charge of Rev. E. R. Rorem, assisted by Rev. E. Duea of Dows, a former pastor of Mr. Auestad. Rev. Rorem spoke in Norwegian and Rev. Duea in the English language. Both spoke in loving tribute to the memory of the deceased.

Many beautiful floral offerings covered the casket. Mrs. O. B. Anderson and Mrs. A. L. Peterson had charge of the flowers.

The Norwegian ladies aid gave a sum of money to the missions in his memory. The music numbers were two songs by the men's chorus: "Rock of Ages" and "Near, Near to Thee," a solo, "Good Night Here but Good Morning Up There" by Rev. G. C. Swain of Sheldahl. Solo, "Fade, Fade Each Earthly Joy" by Miss Ella Maland of Ottumwa, and a Norwegian song "Der Mange Skai Komme Fra Ost Og Fra Vest" was sung by Miss Ruth Halverson. The latter song by request of Mr. Auestad as it had been used at his brother's funeral in Norway several years ago.

The pall bearers were: Donald Auestad of Kensett, Kingley Auestad of Cherokee, Harry Cairns of Des Moines, Ingvald, Arthur and Andrew Estrem of Slater.

Haktor Iver Auestad was born in Etne, Norway Jan. 16, 1848 and died at the Lutheran hospital in Des Moines, November 6, 1931, reaching the age of 83 years, 9 months and 21 days. He was baptised and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in his childhood community. He was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. Ivar Halverson Auestad. His marriage to Anna Maried Erickson took place in 1971. They came to America in 1881 and took up their residence in Sheldahl, Iowa. Shortly after his arrival he secured work as section foreman for the Northwestern railway company and worked in that capacity for number of years. His wife died, February 5, 1898 in Sheldahl.

He later moved to Slater, where his marriage to Serine O. Wald took place, July 18, 1899. His wife died in Slater, January 2nd, 1929. A short time after the death of his wife, he went to make this home with his daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. M. S. Heggen. Last Tuesday he was taken seriously ill and Wednesday underwent an operation at the Lutheran hospital, Friday morning he passed peacefully away.

Mr. Auestad was one of the well-loved pioneer of this community. He leaves to mourn his departure, five children, Mrs. Belle Larson of Albion, Wyoming, Mrs. Ida Peterson of Sheldahl, Mrs. Sarepta Heggen of Slater, Herman Auestad of Des Moines and Andrew Auestad of Kensett. All were present at the services.

He also leaves nineteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. O. Zackaraiason of Elmore, Minn., Mrs. K. O. Highland of Roland and Mrs. Tom Estrem of Sheldahl. Burial was made in the Sheldahl cemetery. F. T. Riis, funeral director was in charge.

This was one of the largest funerals held here for some time. Among those here from a distance in attendance at the funeral services were Arthur Zackaraiason of Elmore, Minn., Mrs. Olaf Englby and son Inmar Englby of Ledyard, Mr.a nd Mrs. Anfin Nelson and daughter of Gilbert, Rev. and Mrs. E. Highland of Roland, Miss Ella Maland of Ottumwa, Mr. and Mrs. Kingsley Auestad of Cherokee, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Auestad and children of Kensett, Mrs. Lewis Larson of Albion, Wyo., Mr. and Mrs. Herman Auestad and Miss Geraldine, Andrew Ryerson, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Peterson and Miss Elaine, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cairns, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Halverson, Mr. and Mrs. Broquist, Misses Catherine and Irene Auestad of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Hobart Johnson of Clarion, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Soderland and sons, Mr. and Mrs Oscar Peterson and daughter of Madrid, Mr. and Mrs. Randolph Peterson, Mrs. Tom Estrem, Rev. and Mrs. G.
