Funeral Services Held for Pioneer Woman of Palestine Township

Special to the Journal:
Slater, July 15--Funeral services for Mrs. Martin Brown, 81, were held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 at her home and at 2 o'clock at the Bethlehem church. Mrs. Roland Swanson and Miss Dorothy Weeks sang "The Old Rugged Cross" to open the service and after the scripture reading Miss Anna Sheldahl of Sheldahl sang a Norwegian favorite hymn, "Den Store Hvide Flok." Rev. E. R. Rorem, her pastor, then paid a fitting tribute to this pioneer woman and after the sermon Miss Anna Sheldahl and Mrs. Ed Anderson of Sheldahl sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere."

Several gifts in her memory were made to missions. The floral tributes were in charge of Mrs. Roland Swanson and Miss Dorothy Weeks. Burial was in the Bethlehem cemetery.

Martha Elizathe Berhow-Brown was born at Madrid, Ia., May 30, 1861 and died Friday were Thomas and Anna Berhow. With her parents she moved to near Huxley where she was confirmed and grew to womanhood. She was married to Martin Brown in March, 1898. To this union was born one son, Thomas Arthur, who died in 1937. Left to mourn her death are five stepchildren: Mrs. H. C. Granseth, Ossey, and Marie, of Slater, Edward of Ames, and Mrs. C. O. Neslund of Des Moines. She also leaves three sisters: Mrs. Helen Johnson of Des Moiens, Mrs. Elsie Wicks of Madelia, Minnesota, and Mrs. Sarah Lush of Leedale, Alberta, Canada, and a large number of other relatives and friends.

Through all her lengthy illness she was patient and lied very near her Lord and anxiously awaited His summons.

Out-of-town relatives present at her burial were Mrs. O. J. Berhow and children, Agnes, Austin, Tom, Leslie and Orville of Forest City; Mr. and Mrs. Everett King, Mrs. Hubert Terrill and sons Richard, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Hartgrave and children, Beverley and Robert, Mr. and Mrs. Dayton Anderson, John Padden, Mrs. Helen Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Neslund and daughters, Paul Johnson and Phyllis, Mr. and Mrs. Milo Jorgenson, Joyce Jorgenson and Carrie Larson, all of Des Mones; Miss Anna Sheldahl, Mrs. Ed Anderson, Mrs. Randolph Peterson and Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Soderstrum of Sheldahl; Harold Wicks, Oscar and Osmond Larson and Huxley and Mrs. Nels Flugum of Ostrander, Minn.
