Funeral Service for Osmund Vallem
Special to the Journal.
McCallsburgh, Aug. 1--Grandsons of O. J. Vallem served as pallbearers at the funeral service held at Zion Lutheran church, north of here in Hardin county. Short services had been held at the home at Northfield, Minn., the day before, after which the body was brought her for funeral and interment.Rev. Barstad was in charge of the service and the pallbearers were Franklin Lee, Ivan Vallem, Obed Lee, Kenneth, Gerald and Osmond Vallem.
Relatives in attendance from a distance in addition to the immediate family were Mrs. John Norem and daughter of Ottawa, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Rasmussen of Neward, Ill., PeterKirkus of Leland, Ill., Knudt Knudson of Algona and Mr. and Mrs. Orren Danielson of Ellsworth.
Mr. Vallem was in his usual active and healthy life until a year ago when he began to fail in health and continued until the past two weeks when he became bedfast and failed rapidly the last few days of his life. Sunday evening at 7:40 he passed into his Great Beyond very peacefully, where there in so suffering or pain.
He was a very devoted and loving Christian husband and father to his children all through his earthly life with them.
He gave his remaining years to a true and faithful worship to God and his last words ere in prayer to God.
Osmond J. Vallem, son of Jacob and Bretta Vallem was born in Airdall, Norway, Oct. 24, 1849 and died at Northfield, Minn., July 24, 1932 at the ageo f 81 years and 9 months.
He migrated to America in 1869 at the age of nineteen and made his home in Leland, Ill.
On March 11, 1875 he was united in marriage to Malinda Steffenson at Leland. Three years after their marriage they came to Iowa and farmed near Nevada.
In 1882 he settled on his present farm near Garden City, where he made his family home until l915 when he retired from his farm and moved to Northfield, where he lived a quieter life until his death.
To this union were born twelve children, nine living as follows: Mrs. Danielson, Iver Vallem, Geo. Vallem, Mrs. Peterson, Martin Vallem, Mrs. Michaelson, Mrs. Lee, Mrs. Hickox and Breddia.
Steve Vallem grew to manhood and died at the age of 34 in Rupert, Idaho where he was laid to rest. Two children died in infancy There were 34 grandchildren of whom 31, with two great grandchildren are living.
