Last Rites For Mrs. O. J. Vallem

McCALLSBURG--The last rites for Mrs. O. J. Valem of Northfield, Minn., and a former pioneer resident of Story and Hardin counties, were held Friday afternoon in Garden City, with Rev. Mork in charge, assisted by Rev. H. N. Bakke of McCallsburg.

A prayer service was held in the home of her son, Martin Vallem, the old family home, followed by services in the Lutheran church in Garden City. A talk was given by Ivan Vallem, paying loving tribute to his grandmother.

The music was furnished by Rev. Bakke, who sang "Nu Har Jeg Vuden" in the home, and congregational singing a solo by Rev. Mork and by the choir at the church.

Casket bearers were two sons and four grandsons of the deceased, George Vallem, Martin Vallem, Kenneth Vallem, Ivan Vallem, Franklin Lee and Milford Michaelson. The many beautiful floral offerings were cared for by Mrs. Inger Nessa and Mrs. Oleta Skie. There were a great many gifts to worthy causes and missions given in her memory.

Burial was made in the Stavanger cemetery of Garden City by the side of the husband, who preceded her in death in 1932.

Mallin, daughter of Torness and Stephen Stephenson was born June 2, 1856, at Hugensund, Norway and passed away Wednesday, August 1, 1952, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bertha Danielson of McCallsburg, at the age of 95 years, 1 month and 29 days. Mrs. Vallem came to America at the ageof 15 and made her home with an uncle in Leland, Ill., where on March 11, 1875, she was united in marriage to Osmund Jacob Vallem, in the Lutheran church in Leland, Ill., with Rev. O. Anderson officiating.

Mr. and Mrs. Vallem lived a year in Illinois then came to Iowa locating on a farm in Story county. In 1883 they settled on a farm in Hardin county which continued to be their home until they moved to Northfield, Minn., in 1914, to make their home.

Mrs. Vallem has been in failing health for several years and in April came to visit her children in Iowa. Saturday she became seriously ill and continued to fail until Wednesday morning, when she slept peacefully away to her heavenly home.

Mrs. Vallem was a devoted Christian mother, a member of the Northfield Lutheran church and church aid society.

Mr. and Mrs. Vallem were the parents of 12 children, two of whom, Otto and an infant daughter preceded the mother in death.

The ten surviving children, most of whom were privileged to be with their mother during her last days are Bertha, Mrs. Rasmus Danielson of McCallsburg, Iver Vallem of Ellswoth, Ia., Steve Vallem of Rupert, Idaho, Regina, Mrs. Tom Auestad of Garden City, Ia., George Vallem, Zearing, Ia., Martin Vallem, Garden City, Ia., Gurine, Mrs. Willie Michaelson of Nevada, Ia., Emma, Mrs. Alfred C. Lee, Garden City, Ia., Mae, Mrs. Arthur Hickox of California, and Miss Briddia Vallem of Northfield.
