Lemuel White

Memorial services for Mr. Lemuel White, longtime resident of the Maxwell community were held at the Maxwell Christian Church on Saturday, April 27, 1:30 p.m. Officiating ministers were Rev. David Shaeffer, assisted by a former minister of the church, Rev. Oscar Barrow of Elkhart. Organist was Mrs. Carol Myers and the soloist was Mr. Don Myers.

Mr. White, a veteran of two World Wars was given full military rites at the place of interment--the Iowa Center Cemetery, by the Maxwell American Legion Post No. 249 with Commanding Officer Glenn Huggins, Squad Commander Russell Sparks, squad member was David McHone. Casket bearers were Bob Kirk, Hansel Lowe, Raymond Alleman, Dick Milligan, Alvin Coles and Leonard Golly.

Lemuel Robert White was born the Francis Marion White and Geanette Reagon on October 28, 1898, and passed away at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines on April 24, 1974, at the age of 75 years, 5 months and 27 days.

Lem was born and reared in the Maxwell community and spent his entire life here. Mr. White joined the Maxwell Christian Church and was baptized by Rev. Brondt in October of 1917.

He was united in marriage with Marie Oyler at Nevaa, Iowa on January 30, 1920. Their children were two daughters, Naomi and Esther.

As a young man he volunteered to serve his country as a member of its Armed Forces during World War I and also served his country again in World War II.

His life's work was floor sanding and interior decorating, a field of work in which he was most proficient.

Throughout his life he served with distinction the several offices bestowed upon him by his church, first as a deacon in 1936 and later as an elder in 1949. He was honored by being appointed a lifetime elder in the later years of his church-related services. He also spent some time serving as a trustee of his church.

Community wise, Mr. White served as a Boy Scout leader for many years as he loved working with young people. He was a some time member of the VFW and was a 50 year member of the Maxwell American Legion Post No. 249.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, two brothers, and two grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Marie, Mrs. Kenneth (Naomi) Smith, Newton, Ia., Mrs. Ralph (Esther) Carver of Collins, Ia., 2 sisters, Mrs. Pauline Griffeth of Madison, Wisconsin and Mrs. Lola Davis of Des Moines, Ia., four brothers survive and they are Asa of Belmond, Max of Ames, Gale of Kelley and John of Oceanside, California. Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren and 5 grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, along with a host of friends.

Mr. White loved the out-of-doors with fishing being his greatest hobby.

He was of a pleasant disposition and he lived believing that God's ways are best for any man and that they give their own rewards. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him in the Maxwell community.
