Last Rites for David Mulcahy, 90 At Colo Church

David Mulcahy, widely known and highly respected pioneer farmer of the Colo community, was laid to rest in St. James cemetery at Colo Monday July 21.

Funeral services in St. Mary's church in Colo were conducted by Rev. Father James Supple of Ames. Music was rendered by St. Mary's church choir with Mrs. Frances O'Donnell as organist. Casket bearers were Leo Croker, Patrick Fitzgerald Sr., William Fitzgerald, James Croker, Dave Mulcahy (all nephews) and William Jennett. The many beautiful floral offerings were cared for by Miss Zola Zee Carver and Mrs. Pauline Olson.

Born in Ireland

David Mulcahy was born February 7, 1857 at Limmerick, Ireland, the son of Patrick and Bridget Mulcahy. He came to America with his parents in November 1863 and lived in Chicago until November of 1868, when they moved to Iowa, settling on the farm south of Colo in New Albany township.

From that time, when he was 11 years old, until his death on Friday, July 18th, he lived for 79 years continuously on the same farm. He is the last of the original Mulcahy family which migrated to the country, four brothers and three sisters preceding him inn death. His father passed away on March 7, 1879 and his mother on Jan. 26, 1894.

He was united in marriage on Feb. 13, 1895 to Alice Smith, and to this union five children were born, two daughters, Mary and Josephine both deceased, and three sons, Jay and Joe at home and Marcus of Langdon, N. D. He is survived by his widow and the three sons, all of whom and Mrs. Oscar Johnson were at his bedside at the time of his death.

He was kind and loving husband and father and faithful to his church. He was a successful farmer and stock man, honest and upright in his dealings, a good neighbor, and most highly regarded by all in the community of which he had been so long a member. In recent years the active management of the farm had been taken over by hi son, Joe, but he maintained an active interest in its operation to the time of his death.
