Collins' Oldest Citizen Died Last Week
Special to the Journal.
Collins, Dec. 31--Funeral services for Mrs. Cyntha Mead, 93, who died at her home here on Christmas day, were held Friday afternoon at the Methodist church and largely attended.Cynthia Mead was born near Towanda, Bradford county, Pennsylvania, July 21, 1835 and passed away quietly from this life at nine o'clock Christmas morning at the age of 93 years, 5 months and 4 days. At the time of her death she was the oldest citizen of Collins.
She was the eldest daughter of James G. and Eliza Thurston Mead and was the last of a family of seven children to survive.
She was united in marriage to John Mead on Sept. 18, 1852 to which union seven children were born, a daughter and three sons Frank, William and Charles have preceded her in death. The three surviving sons are James -. of Collins, George E. of State Center and Joseph C. of Raymond, Minn. She leaves to mourn her death her sons 17 grandchildren and 37 great grand children.
In 1853 she and her husband with other relatives moved to Ohio and in 1854 to DeKalb county, Illinois. In 1864 they came to Iowa and settled in Story county near the present town of Collins. They were one of the early pioneer families of the county and witnessed the growth of this town. Here Mr. Mead passed away Nov. 30, 1886.
Mrs. Mead joined the Christian church about 60 years ago at the time the church services were held at the Northwestern school house in Collins township. Her life has been on of Christian faith.
Mrs. Mead, better known by all as Grandma Mead was a devoted wife, a loving mother and kind and helpful neighbor and friend. For many years she has patiently awaited her Master's call.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 o'clock Friday afternoon at the Methodist church, Rev. John Adamson in charge.
The pallbearers were her grandsons, Fred and Glen Mead, great grandsons Lowell and Harold Carver and grand sons-in-law, Wm. Fitzgerald and Elmer Goodman.
Interment was in Evergreen cemetery at Collins.
