From Nevada Journal July 14, 1899 (page 5)

Death of William J. Zahn

William J. Zahn, aged 36 years, 11 months and 19 days, was born in Urbana , Champaign county, Ill., July 30, 1862, and died at Nevada, Iowa, Wednesday, July 12, 1899. He came to Emmettsburg, Iowa, in 1890, and the following year commenced the manufacture of cigars at Spencer. He was married at Boone November 25, 1896, to Miss Hattie Welch of Spencer, and to this union was born one child. In November, 1896, he moved his business from Spencer to Nevada and continued the manufacture of cigars here. He was a member of the German Lutheran church of Pontiac, Ill. He leaves a wife and child, mother, Mrs. White of Runnells, Iowa, two sisters, Mrs. Chris Shrader and Mrs. Ray Miller of Des Moines, and two brothers, Ed Zahn of Pontiac, Ill., and Edwin Ballou* of Runnells.

The death is an exceptionally sad one and the sorrowing relatives have the sympathy of the entire community. Mr. Zahn had worked up a lucrative business since coming to Nevadan and had just moved into a large room on the west side of Linn street, where he would in a few days, had it not been for his sickness and death, have opened up a large wholesale and retail business.

The funeral services will be held at the M. E. church today at 2 o'clock under the direction of the I. O. O. F. lodge, Rev. Brown preaching the sermon. The remains will be placed in the Nevada cemetery.

*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: William Zahn was the son of Charles Zahn and Nancy Brayton. The half-brother of William J. Zahn was Eden Morris Blue (not Edwin Ballou as stated), son of Michael J. Blue and Nancy Brayton.
