Mrs. Roche Was Born Near Zearing
Funeral services for Mrs. Joe Roche, who died at St. Thomas hospital, Marshalltown, May 13, were held at St. Gabriels church, Zearing, at 10 o'clock Saturday morning, May 16, by her beloved pastor, Rev. F. J. Frein. After the requiem mass Rev. Frein delivered a beautiful sermon meditating briefly on the life of the deceased. The acolytes were Paul Wheelock and Vincent Moroney.
The pall bearers were Messrs. Francis Lynch, Fred Morell, Martin Wheelock, Charles Morell, cousins and John and Frank Roche Jr. brothers-in-law.
Flowers were cared for by Mrs. Nellie Gogerty and Mrs. Cleo Moon.
Interment was in St. Patrick's cemetery, Nevada, where the final blessing was given by Rev. Frein.
Mrs. Roche was the daughter of the late Charles Carmody and Margaret Carmody and was born Sept. 16, 1896 on a farm 5 mile southwest of Zearing where the family resided for a number of years.
Mary received her early training at the Eddy school near her home. Later she entered St. Mary's Institute at Marshalltown and St. Vincent's school Dubuque.
For two years she was successful teacher in the rural schools southwest of Zearing.
On Nov. 29, 1916 she was united in marriage to Mr. Joe Roche also of Zearing and located on a farm south of Zearing, later moving to the home where the family now live.
To this union were born five children: James, Elizabeth and Francis who with the father, survive. Two sons having preceded her in death. Besides her faithful husband and children she leaves to mourn her death her aged mother with whom she shared her home and two brothers John and Patrick, and a host of sorrowing relatives and friends.
Mrs. Roche died as she lived a faithful and true Catholic, fortified by the last blessing of her church.
Those attending from a distance were Mrs. Delia Walker and grandson of Denver, Mr. John Carmody of Omaha, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Carmody of Perry; Mr. and Mrs. John Moroney of Nevada, Mrs. Frank Lynch and son Francis of Eagle Grove; Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Decker of St. Joseph, Mo.; Mr. and Mrs. John Varnum of Marshalltown, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Curby and family of Spencer; Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Nolan of Rhodes; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Wheelock and family of Nevada, Mrs. Mary Morell and daughter Theresa, Mrs. Fred Morrell of Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. Lee Backoff of Maxwell, Mr.and Mrs. Albert Birchmeier of Maxwell and Mr. Joe Backoff of Rhodes.
