O'NEIL FUNERAL WEDNESDAY
Story County Veterans in Colo in Attendance
A score of members of the local post of the G. A. R. was over at Colo Wednesday afternoon in attendance at the funeral of the later John O'Neil, who died there so suddenly on Monday forenoon. Mr. O'Neil was one of the well known men of that part of the county, had a wide acquaintance in Nevada and whereover he was known was popular.
The funeral services were held during the afternoon and interment was according to the rites of the Grand Army of which he was a member and very active.
John O'Neil was born a Lafayette, Indiana, on July 4, 1845. He came to Iowa in October, 1856 and on Aug. 17, 1863 he entered into the civil war under Col. Shirtes regiment. He was a member of the 8th Iowa Cavalry Company I. He was at the bloody battle of Franklin and many other great battles. In August, 1865 he was mustered out of service.
On December 8, 1869 he was untied in the holy bonds of matrimony to Mary French at Nevada, Iowa. To this union 3 children were born, tow sons and one daughter.
Five old messmates of his during the war were present at the funeral, namely Dudley Arrasmith of Ames, Cloud Brock of Marshalltown, Wilson Beeson, G. D. Peggs and Mr. Armstrong.
Besides these five old soldiers, I. S. French, Alex Miller, both of Marshalltown and G. A. R. post of Nevada were present.
Relatives from a distance were Mr. Ira French of Edison, Nebraska, Mr. and Mrs. Rummens of Livermore, Mrs. Chas. French and son and family of Lawrence, Clark French and Mrs. Belle Chitty of Fernald.
Others present were L. C. Adams of Cedar Rapids, Frank Miller of Montana and many others from Nevada.
