Last Rites Wednesday For Mrs. Thorsbakken
STORY CITY--Funeral services for Mrs. Betsey Thorsbakken were conducted Wednesday, May 30, at 1:30 in the Larson-Peterson Funeral home and 2:00 in the Immanuel church with the Rev. A. O. S---srud in charge. Special music of the church service included a rendering of "The Lord's Prayer" by Emmet Olson of Jewell and "Den Store Hvide Flok" by Pastor S--bsrud.
A large number of Memorial gifts in memory of Mrs. Thorsbakken were gratefully acknowledged and members of the bereaved family and friends were guests of Immanuel Ladies Aid for light refreshments served following the postal service.
Pall bearers were Herman Haugland, Arnold Erickson, Melbourne Henderson, Herman Wicks, Mayer Johnson and Gaylord Henryson. Burial was in the Fairview cemetery of Story City.
Obituary
Mrs. Betsey Thorsbakken was born in Sonderland, Norway, August 30, 1866 to the parents, Sokarias and Buri Sydness. At the age of 14 she emigrated to America and arrived in the vicinity of Story City, Ia., in 1881, to make her home with an older sister.
In 1891 she was united in marriage to Ole Thorsbakken of Story City. Together with her husband, she made her home on a farm north and east of Story City. Accepting the privations of a pioneer wife, she faithfully helped her husband in the business of making a home and clearing the acres of their farmland. To their union six children were born. One child, a daughter Clara died in infancy. The five children left to mourn her passing are her daughter, Mabel (Mrs. Thomas Solbrack of Jewell) and her sons Selmer and Henry of Story City, Otis of Randall and Arthur of Alden. Also surviving are two brothers Tollef and Christopher Sydness of Norway, two sisters, Mrs. Lambert Stole, Minneapolis, Minn. and Mrs. P. C. Peterson of Deer Creek, Minn. and 20 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
After an illness of several months, Mrs. Thorsbakken passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Thomas Solbrack at Jewell on May 26 at the age of 84 years, ten months and 26 days.
Mrs. Thorsbakken was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith in the Lutheran church in Norway. She was charter member of the Immanuel Congregation in Story City in which congregation she was a faithful member to the time of her passing.
Together with her many immediate relatives, Mrs. Thorsbakken endeared herself to a host of friends who also mourn her passing. May God Bless her memory.
