James Taylor

James Taylor, 87, of Nevada died Thursday, Jan. 4, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames of a stroke.

Taylor was born Sept. 11, 1902, in Dickens to George and Lucille Taylor. He married Delores McConnell on Jan. 10, 1970 in Nashua.

Taylor was owner and operator of the Nevada Gamble Store from 1938 to 1955 and the Nevada Hotel from 1956 to 1967. He was also a pioneer Iowa aviator, working as a pilot and mechanic since 1927. He was a member of the national Ox-5 Club, an organization of pioneer aviators, and past president of the club. He also was a charter member of the Nevada Lions Club, remaining active until his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents, eight brothers, and his wife. Survivors include one son, Donald Taylor of Boca Raton, Flor.; one daughter, Shirley Taylor of Santa Fe, N.M.; one grandson, Douglas J. Taylor of Atlanta, Geo.; one granddaughter, Debra Salvador of San Antonio, Texas; three great grandsons; and two sisters, Bessie Arney of Hartley and Alice Barton of Mankato, Minn.

The funeral was held Monday, Jan. 8, at 11 a.m. at Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada with eulogies by Dayton Countryman and Donald Williams. Burial was at the Nevada Cemetery.
