William Stevenson Dies Sunday
William A. Stevenson, a former school teacher and postmaster of McCallsburg, died Sunday afternoon at 5 at the Story County Hospital, where he had been a patient for the past two months.
Stevenson, 75, resided at 932 First St., Nevada. He had been in failing health for about a year.
Born November 23, 1888 in Hardin Co., he was the son of Samuel and Mary Stevenson. He had been a resident of Story County for 42 years. A school teacher as a young man, he became postmaster at McCallsburg after World War I and served until 1922 when he started farming northwest of Nevada. Since retiring farm the farm he had helped in both of Nevada's hardware stores.
Stevenson was married to Bertha Ann Menzel in 1913. He was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church, of which he was an elder and trustee. He was a veteran of World War I and a member of the 40 & 8.
Survivors include his wife, Bertha Ann; one son, Richard E. Stevenson of Chicago; a daughter, Mrs. Vera Ann Tarman of Des Moines; three grandchildren; and one brother, Marion Stevenson of Nevada.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and one son, Earl William, who died in 1938.
Funeral services will be at the Central Presbyterian Church on Wednesday afternoon at 2 with the Reverends Frank P. Hladky and J. D. Ramson officiating. Burial will be in the Nevada Cemetery.
The family will be at the Ryan Funeral Home Tuesday from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9. The casket will not be opened at the church or after the services.
