William Stark, Maxwell Pioneer, Called By Death

Maxwell, August 10--William Stark, 88, pioneer of the Maxwell neighborhood, died at his home here at 1:30 a.m. today after a brief illness.Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:00 at the Methodist Episcopal church, followed by burial in the Maxwell cemetery by the side of his wife who passed away about 12 years ago.
He leaves besides his daughter Mrs. N. Jay Peterson and Misses Nettie and Hazel, the latter who lived in the home with him, 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Mr. Stark was born April 19, 1850 in Lemon township, near Tundhannock, Penna. He lived in that state until he was eighteen years of age when he went to Sycamore, Ill., where he worked as a farm hand for eighteen months. In 1874 he took up a homestead in Dakota territory. He was then 24 years old.
In 1879 he came back to Iowa and was married to Miss Sarah Jane Carver February 13, 1879, at Nevada, together returning to the Dakotas where they lived a number of years ago.
In 1898 they came back to Iowa and located on a farm about five miles southeast of Maxwell that is now occupied by the son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. N. Jay Pearson.
In March, 1905, he retired and with his wife and family moved to Maxwell, where Mr. Stark had resided with his daughters, the Misses Nettie and Hazel Stark, the mother having passed away in September, 1926.
Besides his three daughters, he has six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Mr. Stark had been in good health, though he was a "shut-in" during the winter months on account of the weather conditions.
