Last Rites Held For Fred Shalley

Fred J. Shalley, 78, 408 F Avenue, Nevada, passed away Wednesday, July 7, at 4 a. m. at the Story County hospital where he had been a patient for the last three weeks.

Funeral services were conducted from the Ryan Funeral Home Friday morning, July 9th, at 10:30 a. m. with the Rev. E. P. Windman officiating. Mrs. Cecil Henderson, soloist, accompanied by Mrs. Richard Benson at the organ, sang two hymns, "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden." Casket bearers were M. U. Apple, Glenn Davis, F. C. Tarman, Clyde Steward, Earl Shalley and Ivan Shalley. He was laid to rest in the Nevada cemetery.

Fred Shalley was born October 5, 1875, at Fairview, Pennsylvania, the son of George and Sarah Shalley. A retired builder, he had lived in Story county the past sixty-three years. He married Nellie Halley on December 30, 1897 at Morrison, Illinois.

He is survived by his wife, Nellie, four daughters: Mrs. Ralph (Marie) Carstens of Newton, Mrs. Leota Emerson and Mrs. Gladys Smart of Ames and Miss Ilo Shalley of Washington, D. C.; one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Melohn of Nevada, two granddaughters, Wilma Emerson of Ames, and Mrs. Charles (Dolores) McFadden of Arlington, Virginia, as well as a number of nieces and nephews. One son, Leal, who died in infancy, a grandson, Dick Emerson, who was killed in action in World War II, two brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.
