Merle Lattig is dead
Merle I. Lattig, a retired Nevada restaurateur, died at the Story County Hospital Tuesday morning at the age of 85.
Mr. Lattig had been seriously ill for the past two weeks after suffering a coronary attack.
He and his wife operated Lattig's Cafe on Nevada's main street for years in the building now occupied by Gandrup's Pharmacy. They retired about 1960.
Born August 19, 1885 in Plain City, Ohio, he was the son of Cyrus and Mary Lattig. He was married to Alice Henderson July 15, 1914 in Aberdeen, S.D. and the couple lived in Nevada for the past 55 years.
He was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, was a former church secretary, a member of Nevada Lodge No. 99 A.F. & A.M., Za Ga Zig Shrine, a charter member of the Indian Creek Country Club and a member of the Iowa Senior Golf Club.
He will be remembered for years in the community as one of the town's oldest and most active golfers. He played nearly every day in season and had waled the course until recently.
He had sot two holes-in-one in his life, both on the No. 5 hole on his home course at Indian Creek.
Survivors include a son, Robert of Los Angeles, Calif.; a daughter Mrs. Dorothy Crowther of Hancock, Mich.; three grandchildren; three brothers, Guy of Boise, Idaho, Arthur of Payette, Idaho, and Dana Lattig of Macksburg, Iowa; and one sister, Mrs. H. H. Crandal of San Clemente, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Ryan Funeral Home.
