DEATHS

Mrs. Oliver Newman

Funeral rites for Mrs. Oliver Newman were held Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 6, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater.

Rev. W. A. Adix officiated at the services, using as his sermon theme, "Living and Dying to the Lord" based on Romans 14:7-9.

Rev. Leo Bjorlie of St. Paul, Minn., former pastor of Bethlehem Church, assisted in the services, reading the Scriptures and giving a brief tribute to the influence of a Christian life on others.

Mrs. Lowell Accola of Kelley served as organist.

Vocal music was provided by Nilus Ihle, soloist, who sang "How Great Thou Art" and by Mrs. Lester Becker and Robert Weeks who sang "O Divine Redeemer" as a duet.

Pallbearers were Charles Estrem, Gurton Erickson, Emmett Holland, LeRoy Estrem, Veryl Ruggles and Dean Alsin.

The many beautiful flowers were in care of Mrs. George Jones and Mrs. Freebert Riis.

Interment was made in the Bethlehem Cemetery at Slater.

Mrs. Ellida Newman, daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Fronsdahl was born May 11, 1897 on a farm north of Slater. She died suddenly on Saturday morning, Feb. 6, 1971, at her home in Slater after a brief illness at the age of 73 years, 8 months and 26 days.

She was baptized and confirmed at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater. She graduated from Slater High School and attended Drake University where she majored in music.

On June 27, 1917 she was united in marriage to Oliver Newman. The couple farmed northwest of Slater until 1949 when they retired and moved to Slater. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June 1967.

She was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and for the past 14 years had served as church organist.

Preceding her in death were her parents; one sister, Mrs. Ingwal (Belle) Estrem and two brothers, Thomas and Eli.

Survivors include her husband, Oliver; two sons, Robert and Jerrol of Slater; one daughter, Mrs. Ron (Marilyn) Dobbe of Huxley; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren and one brother, Clarence Fronsdahl of Salem, Oregon.

She will always be remembered for her beautiful music, her efforts with scores of piano and organ students and her own composition, "Angel's Chorus". She left a message in song and melody in the hearts of many. Her tireless efforts for others and ready smile will be missed by all who knew her.
