Obituary

Lars H. Haugstad was born March 4, 1877 on a farm southwest of Nevada, to Ole and Lurene Haugsted, one of ten children. He grew to manhood and lived most of his life in the Nevada community, and died Nov. 18, 1954, at the age of 77 years, 8 months and 14 days. Immediate cause of death was a heart condition.

At the age of 9 years, Mr. Haugsted was baptised in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Nevada.

On June 22, 1902 he was united in marriage to Laura Nelson in Nevada, after which they began their married life on a farm in Eldora, Iowa, but a year later returned to the Nevada area to stay.

Five children were born to this marriage, Hazel, Beulah, William, Velda and Clarence. In addition, a nephew, Allen Haugsted, lived in the Haugsted home a number of years.

While beginning to make favorable progress on the farm, Mr. Haugstad was injured in a corn picker accident and as a result the family moved to Nevada as the children were too young to assist in the work. In Nevada Mr. Haugsted engaged in various occupations until about 25 years ago, when crippling arthritis made him bedfast for several years.

Perhaps is was Mr. Haugsted's courage and will-power, along with a desire to lessen any burden upon his family, that he lifted himself from a life in bed to partial use of a wheel chair in recent years.

By means of the chair, and a hand from both friend and stranger, he manged to make contacts for a modest insurance business. He also spent many patient hours around the home working on the lawn and his garden, from his chair. The results of a day's work by Mr. Haugsted did no appear great--but for him, the efforts, and the satisfaction were.

Surviving are his wife, Laura and five children, Mrs. Reuben Jacobsen, Randle, Washington; Mrs. Kenneth McConnell, Cambridge; William, Velda and Clarence, all of Nevada and six grandchildren. He also leaves two sisters, Marie Lehman, Hinsdale, Ill. and Mathilda Haugsted, Fairbault, Minn.; three brothers, William of Chicago, Ill, Yance of Wakeman, Ohio and Andrew of Delta, Colo.

Deceased brothers are Chris, John, Peter and Ross.

From Out of Town

Friends and relatives were in attendance from Ames, Marshalltown, and Des Moines; and also Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Hobert and family, Dayton, Iowa, Mr.a nd Mrs. Sophus Nelson, Titonka, Iowa, Mr. Ernest Nelson, Kanawha, Iowa and Allen Haugsted, Willmar, Minn.
