SMOTHERED IN DIRT.

Carl Hardy Killed by the Caving in of a Gravel Pit.

Carl Hardy, a lad 17 years old but rather large for his age, was buried Thursday afternoon in the gravel pit two and a half miles east of Nevada, and was dead when dug out. He was in the employ of W. H. Boynton and had gone to the pit alone after a load of gravel. No one saw or heard the accident; but his team came out of the pit alone, and no one following it, Oscar Finley living on the adjacent farm, became suspicious and with his neighbor Lou Williams and another went to investigate. Finding the cave-in Messrs. Finley and Williams dug into it, while the third man took the team and same to town for more help. The boy was soon found, face downward and dead with his head under about ten inches of gravel but with his body and legs much more deeply buried. His body was considerably bruised, and it is reasonable to believe that he was at once made unconscious by the weight of dirt and gravel falling upon him.

Carl Arthur Hardy was the second son of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Hardy and lived with his parents at their home on 9th street in this city. He was strong and industrious, personally agreeable and well regarded. His tragic death is a sad blow to his family and friends. His elder brother was in Minnesota at the time of the accident, but returned in time for the funeral which was conducted Sunday by Rev. Henderson. Mr. and Mrs. Hardy wish to have expressed their thanks for assistance and sympathy tendered them in their time of bereavement.
