TWENTY YEARS AGO

Samuel Bates died at his home in Nevada, Feb. 19, 1900, aged 74 years. He was born at Newton Stewart, in the north part of Ireland. He afterwards located in Cincinnati and was commissioned in 1854 by a company consisting of himself, his brother Joseph, John James, James McGee and a Mr. Baker, all from his own section of Ireland to come out to Iowa and buy land. Prospected from Des Moines north to Howard township where they located. The little colony moved there in 1855.
