Furnas Funeral Was Held Friday Afternoon

Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Furnas, 83, who died at the home of her daughter Mrs. W. A. Olson at Washington, D. C. Tuesday, was held at the Methodist Episcopal church Friday afternoon, with her former pastor Rev. Geo. A. Lawton in charge.

A large group of relatives and friends were gathered for the service. A mixed quartette from the choir furnished the songs and the pallbearers were from among the younger men of the congregation of which she had long been an active and devoted member. Burial was in the Nevada cemetery by the side of her husband who died August 3, 1921.

The following sketch of the life of the deceased was read by the minister:

Elizabeth Snyder-Furnas was born December 20, 1850 at Lancaster county, Penn., a daughter of Jacob and Lydia Snyder. There were three other children in the family, one brother and two sisters who have preceded her in death. Her mother died when she was three years old. At the age of three she came to Iowa where her parents located at Grandview.

On November 20, 1873 she untied in marriage with Charles Clayton Furnas. March 1, 1876 Mr. and Mrs. Furnas moved to a farm in Richland township. This farm remained their home for seventeen years and their two children were born there. The children were Roy Arlington who died at the age of six and Mildred Estelle, now Mrs. S. A. Olson of Washington, D. C. On March 1, 1893 the family moved to Nevada which has been Mrs. Furnas' home with theexception of the past three and one half years which have been spent in Washington. Mr. Furnas died August 8, 1921.

She was a member of the W. R. C., W. C. T. U., the Aid society, the W. F. M. S. in which she served 14 years as treasurer, the Social Hour club. She was converted when an girl and united with the Evangelical church. After moving to Story county she united with the M. E. church at Johnson Grove. Later her membership was transferred to Nevada and some three years ago to Washington, D. C. She was always loyal to and active in the work of her church.

This splendid rugged life came to an end Sept. 4, 1934 at at the age of 82 years, 8 months and 14 days. We look toward that city which hath foundation whose builder and maker is God.

Relatives from a distance in attendance at the funeral included in addition to the daughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Olson, a group of nieces and nephew of the deceased; Mrs. Ed Peck of Euclid, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Henry Shaffer and Mrs. Drose of Letts, Mrs. Clara Conner, Miss Lela Snyder and Charles Snyder of Grandview, Mrs. Lizzie Snyder of Grandview a friend of the deceased; Mrs. Ella Ryan, sister of W. A. Olson and her daughters Mrs. White and Mrs. Cord of Des Moines, and Mr. and Mrs. Gogerty of Zearing.
