Shirley Adell (Insko) Hoag
May 20, 1926 ~ August 27, 2018 (age 92)Shirley Hoag passed away on August 27, 2018, at Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She was born on May 20, 1926, on the family farm, to Merrill and Elsie Insko. She attended Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) and taught in a one-room schoolhouse. On June 22, 1947, Shirley married Jim Hoag and they resided in Ames for many years. They were active charter members of St. Andrews Lutheran Church where she taught bible school and Sunday School. Shirley was also active in the community leading Campfire, serving as a room parent, and helping the little old ladies of the neighborhood.
When Jim retired from the DOT in 1983, they moved to Twin Lakes, Iowa, where they loved entertaining their family. They spent many winters in Florida where they enjoyed walking the beaches and picking up MANY shells. Shirley also enjoyed sewing, genealogy, and recycling before it was stylish (being a child of the depression), but her passion was loving, being an honorary Mom, Grandma, or Aunt-Grandma to many.
Shirley is survived by daughters, Faye Moon of Ames, and Marsha Burkhalter of West Des Moines. Grandchildren Collin Moon (Erin), Karen Moon, Rachel Moon, Erin Gaul (Kevin), Nathan Burkhalter (Tamara), and Beth Middleton (Nick). Great-Grandchildren Evan, Ethan and Easton Moon; Kaelie Spallholtz; James, Thomas, and Stephen Gaul; Aden Burkhalter; and Jackson and Sophia Middleton, siblings Dale Insko; Joy Darling (Carroll); Sharon Helgeland (Harvey); as well as many nieces and nephews. Shirley was preceded in death by husband Jim Hoag, her parents, an infant brother, and son-in-law George Moon.
A gathering of friends and family will be held on Friday, August 31, 2018, 4-7 pm, at Larson- Weishaar Funeral Home in Manson. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, September 1, 2018, 10:30 am, at Augustana Lutheran Church in Manson. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Manson.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Twin Lakes Bible Camp, Augustana Lutheran Church in Manson, or the Twin Lakes Restoration Association.
