ED GRAVES TO BE BURIED IN WESTT

PROMINENT STORY COUNTY CITIZEN DIED IN CALIFORNIA SUNDAY

Ed H. Graves, 66, longtime prominent citizen of Ames and well known over the county, because of his long association with a local mutual insurance company, died at the home of a daughter Mrs. B. H. Read, at Berkley Hills, Calif., Sunday and the funeral and interment will be in California.

Mr. and Mrs. Graves had left Ames but a few weeks ago for California, for the benefit of the health of Mr. Graves, which had been failing recently.

It was at the time of leaving for the west that Mr. Graves resigned the office of secretary of the Farmers Mutual Fire and Lightning insurance company of Story county, which position he had held for many years.

Graves, a prominent citizen of the Ames community had held the office of mayor of Ames and was for years closely identified with the management of the Central Iowa Fair associatio and other public affairs in Ames.

Mr. Graves was born in 1864 on the Iowa State college farm near Ames, in the house in which Dean C. F. Curtiss now lives. In the same year, the family moved to the farm south of Ames now owned by Fred Randau. A. J. Graves, father of Ed H. was superintendent of the college farm from 1864 to 1868.

Until 1886 he lived in Ames, then in Nebraska where he remained for 23 years. In 1909 Mr. Graves returned to Ames and engaged in the real estate and insurance business until his death.

From 1914 until 1918 he was city assessor, and in 1918 was elected mayor of Ames, serving through the difficult years immediately following the war.

In 1888 Mr. Graves was married to Gertrude Wynn, who was connected with Iowa State college for many years. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. B. H. Read of Berkely Hills, Calif.; Miss Genevieve Graves of Los Angeles, and one son, Norman Graves of Omaha.
