PIONEER ROLAND MERCHANT DEAD

LEWIS SHAFLAND DIED SATURDAY AND FUNERAL TO BE WEDNESDAY

Special to the Journal.
Roland, Nov. 3--Lewis Shafland, 59, for 38 years engaged in the jewelry business in Roland and prominent citizen and landowner, died at the state hospital at Clarinda Saturday afternoon.

Mr. Shafland, a sufferer from various complications for ten years, had been at a state hospital for 6 months, after having been treated at various hospitals over country, where the family had taken him in an effort to have his health restored.

Mr. Shafland was a native of Norway and would have been 60 years of age in January. He came to America as a lad of ten years and lived with his family at Cambridge until he was about 22 years of age. He came to Roland and engaged in the jewelry business, when about 22 years of age, having been associated with A. M. Mason, a pioneer Cambridge merchant, to learn his trade as watchmaker and jeweler.

He was married to Miss Bertha Hegland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. O. Hegland and to them six children with the wife and mother survive. They are Erwin Shafland of Des Moines, Sanford Shafland of Decorah and Irene, Lydia and John at home.

He also leaves four brothers and two sisters. They are Ole Sheveland of West Union, Rev. Axel Sheveland of Dalton, Wis., Omund Sheveland and Chris Seveland of Woodhill, Wis., Mrs. Osmund Lewis of Belmond and Mrs. Jonas Lewis of Cambridge.

The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 at Bergen Lutheran church, Roland, with Rev. Sumstadt in charge. There will be a brief service at the home at 1:30.
