Funeral of R. W. Peck Was Largely Attended
Special to the Journal.
McCallsburg, Oct. 15--The funeral of Rollin W. Peck was held Saturday afternoon. Short service were held at the home at Roland with Rev. Holen in charge of Rev. W. O. Benthin of Nevada, assisted by Rev. Holen. Pall bearers were all old friends and neighbors Sam Sampson, sr., Frank Birch and W. H. Reid of McCallsburg and Lars Olson, Henry Thompson and Mr. Neriem of Roland. The music was by Delbert Arrasmith of Nevada who sang at the home "The City Four Square" and "One Sweetly Solemn Thought," at the church; and Mrs. F. E. Nail and Mrs. W. H. Reid accompanied by Miss Cleo Till sang, "It Is Well With My Soul," and, "Asleep in Jesus." The many beautiful flowers were cared for by Mrs. E. O. Dillin and Mrs. T. E. Nail.Burial was made in the family lot in the Warren township cemetery.
Mr. Peck was born at Pandette, Rutland county, Vermont, Jan. 1, 1849, and died at this home in Roland Thursday, Oct. 9, 1931, at the age of 81 years, 10 months, after an illness of several months. While a young lad he came with his parents to Tama county in 1856, where he was married to Miss Eldora Grace at Belle Plain in 1871. To this union six children were born: Mrs. C. H. Beach, of Minneapolis, Minn., Mrs. J. M. Neriem, Belleview, Minn., Ray, of near Roland, Willard of Forest City, Charles and Mrs. Will Holmes, deceased.
Mr. Peck came to Story county in 1884 and with the exception of a few years spent in other places he has since been a resident of Story county, living here and at Roland.
His first wife died June 17, 1895, and in 1904 he was again married this time to Mrs. Sarah E. Graham* of Albia who with the four children and ten great grandchildren survive him, as do two brothers, Sheldon Peck of Blair, Neb. and John Peck of McCallsburg; two half-brothers and a half-sister, James Peck of Marion, Ia., Frank Peck of Canova, S. Dak., and Mrs. Ella Countryman of Winfield, Kans.
Mr. Peck has been poorly since March when he was bedfast several weeks but through the summer he's been up and around the home but was taken worse Wednesday and died at an early hour Thursday morning after a severe attack of heart trouble in the night.
Relatives present at the funeral other than those from Roland and McCallsburg were the son Willard Peck and wife of Forest City, daughter, Mrs. I. M. Neriem of Belleview, Minn., Sheldon Peck of Blair, Neb., Mr. and Mrs. James Peck of Marion, Ia., Mr. and Mrs. Haukoos of Walters, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Donnelson of Marshalltown, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Peck of Nevada, Mr. and Mrs. Millard Peck of Ames, Mr. and Mrs. Omar Bennett and children of Ripley, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Kelse of Eddyville, Archie Surber and Mrs. Laura Rouse of Chicago, Mrs. Phillip Hass and Miss Bessie Hass of Nevada.
