TOLLEF T. THOMPSON HAD BEEN IN SERVICE SINCE IT STARTED
Special to the Journal.
Roland, Oct. 14--Tollev T. Thompson, 59, veteran rural mail carrier of Roland, died at the Iowa Lutheran hospital, Des Moines, early today from the effects of a ruptured intestinal abcess.Mr. Thompson had been ill for about two weeks, but it was thought that he was on his way to recovery, until Sunday, when he was taken worse and was hurried to the hospital where he died at 4:30 this morning.
Tollef is the oldest of the five sons of Torres and Anna Thompson. The youngest of the sons, Oscar T. died a number of years ago. Those surviving are Edward Thompson who lives at home; Osmund M. Thompson and John E. Thompson, all of Roland.
Torres Thompson, pioneer farmer of south of Roland, with his wife, came from Norway in 1870 and settled on a farm south of Roland. The next year their son Tollef was born and he has always lived at home.
With the death of the husband and father and the marriage of the other brothers Tolleff remained at home and was the constant companion and aid of his mother.
Mr. Thompson was a man, quiet and unassuming but was admired for his many fine qualities, including his careful administration of his duties in his public service and his wonderful care and devotion to his aged mother.
Mrs. Thompson, sr., is now about 84 years of age, but is in fairly good health, at her home on South Main street, Roland.
Definite arrangements have not been made for the funeral but it will be held at Salem church probably on Friday.
