GARDEN CITY MAN MET TRAGIC DEATH EARLY TODAY

Zearing, March 13--Herman Fichtner, age about 24, farm hand of near Garden City, was instantly killed last night, when an automobile he was driving was crowded into the ditch and turned over, about two and a half miles north of here on the Jefferson highway, near the Clyde Bailey place.

Dick Berger, Zearing young man, who was riding with Fichtner at the time, escaped serious injury, but the Chevrolet car was wrecked.

Fichtner and Berger were headed north about midnight when they met a large transfer truck from Marshalltown, which crowded them into the ditch, and the car turned over.

Fichtner, a young married man has been employed by Nels Stole on a farm near Garden City.

He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Fichtner, who recently retired from their farm and moved to Radcliffe.

He leaves besides his wife and parents, a brother Ernest Fichtner who lived upon the farm, and two sisters, Mrs. John Hill of Garden City and Miss Alice Fichtner of Hubbard.

The truck, a Model A Ford chassis, belonging to the Bos Truck company of Marshalltown, was driven by Ray Richardson and riding in the truck, was a boy named Harold Pryor, also of Marshalltown.

When Sheriff Hattery and Deputy Ward arrived an hour after the wreck occurred, and looked over the wrecked car, they found ten gallon tins of alcohol in the car.

Aside from a cut upon the hand and some body bruises Berger escaped any serious injury.

The truck was but slightly damaged and neither of the occupants were injured.

The truck had been north on the highway delivering groceries in some of the towns and was enroute back to Marshalltown.

The wife before her marriage was Mrs. Hazel Hil of Garden City, and they have one child, a son, about three years of age.

The body was taken to an undertaking establishment at Hubbard, shortly after the accident and is there pending funeral arrangements.
