Steven Rolfe Ritland, age 78, died on June 1, 2018 from complications from cancer.
Born February 26, 1940, Steven was the oldest child of Herbert L. and Letta O. Ritland. A graduate of Dallas Center High School, he received his BS in Mathematics from Iowa State University in 1962, a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1964, and an MS in Computer Science in 1968. He was one of the first students to graduate with a computer science degree from Iowa State. While a student, Steven worked for Dupont, IBM and ISU (graduate assistant teaching programming courses). Following graduation, Steven worked at IBM in Rochester, Minn. as a software engineer until his retirement in 2004. While there, he received awards for outstanding innovation and contribution for the design and implementation of widely used software products.
Steven is survived by his wife, Nancy; his eight children, Rivkah, Jill, Shoshana, Caleb, Dan, Eunice, Marcus, and Bath-sheba; three stepchildren, Elaine, David and Abinadab; 20 grandchildren; and his brothers, Craig and John. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Steven was well known for his love for God, which was expressed in large part through his personal evangelism efforts including the distribution of tracts. His greatest joy was when those to whom he spoke expressed their appreciation for his willingness to share his faith with them.
Services will be held on Monday, June 4 at Soderstrum Funeral Home, 312 Main Street, Slater, Iowa at 11:00 a.m. following a graveside service at 10:00 a.m. at the Bethlehem Cemetery in Slater.
