Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Dorothy Mae Appelgate passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at the age of 97 while living at Bethany Life in Story City, Iowa. She was surrounded by family, friends and the caring staff at Bethany Life.

Dorothy was born on July 1, 1920 at Hamilton County Hospital in Webster City, Iowa to Clyde J. Rex and Alice Wilson Rex. She was the second oldest of four children. Her siblings were Mary Elizabeth, Clyde and little sister Alice Louise (Peggy).

Growing up she loved learning. She cared for her sister Elizabeth and kept things moving in the house. Sister Peggy says Dorothy never quite got the cow milking down so her strengths were in the home!

She married Glen Arthur Hoversten in 1938 and together farmed and raised six children, Glen Jr., Patty, Janet, Richard, Glenda and Joanne. In 1974 she married William P. Appelgate and blended families with Bill’s children, William K. and Margaret.

Throughout these years she spent most of her life in Iowa with the exception of her time living in Little Rock, AR, and Rutland, MA where she and Bill dedicated many years together serving the beautiful people around the world thru their work with Heifer International. She and Bill traveled extensively through Latin America and Asia. Dorothy served on the UMW Mission Board and was past President and Secretary of the Story City Kiwanis Club.

Dorothy was selfless, adventurous, social, honest, caring, loving and giving. She loved gardening, reading, embroidering, daily devotions and prayers for others, visiting shut-ins, sending cards, entertaining, playing cards and dominoes. She was always thinking of others.

Those thankful for sharing her life include:

Her children Glen Hoversten Jr. and wife Pat, Patty Hoversten, Janet Wing and husband Lyle, Richard Hoversten, Glenda Rahfeldt and husband Ron, Joanne Pelant and husband Robert, William K. Appelgate and wife Joyce, and Margaret Aiseayew.
