Obituary for Kent Marlin Ryen

Kent leaves behind his siblings: Judy (James: deceased) Coyle, of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin; Charles (Patricia née McCarville) Ryen, of Springfield, Missouri; nieces and nephews Kirk Coyle, Karen (John) Eggers, Shaunda (Joe) Bradley, Christopher (Katherine née Tirado) Ryen; great nieces and nephews Alicia Barnes, Andrew Barnes, Alizabeth Barnes, Sophia Bradley, Sadie Bradley, Nolan Ryen, Aidan Ryen and Jackson Ryen, many cousins and extended family, as well as close friends.

Born in Slater on March 26, 1947, Kent was the son of Milford and Irene (née Reinertson), the grandson of Charley and Mattie (née Larson) Ryen, and Randall and Sadie (née Weeks) Reinertson: all from Slater, Iowa. He was a life-long resident of Slater. He enjoyed farming with his father until Milford’s death. The farm was just on the edge of Slater.

Family was very important to Kent. He loved getting together, especially to celebrate the Fourth of July and Christmas. For his whole life, Kent enjoyed cheering at sporting events and watching them live on television. The Nighthawks baseball games held many wonderful memories, as did the Slater Fourth of July celebration.

In his later years, Kent spent time visiting his friends. He began his days with a morning coffee and doughnuts, and enjoyed taking drives to Ankeny and Ames. He loved to make special treats for his friends such as chocolate chip cookies, banana bread, and apple crisp. In the evenings he relaxed at home to watch sports. He was a big Iowa State fan and loved old Westerns such as Bonanza and Wagon Train. To keep in shape, Kent walked outside on the many Slater trails. During inclement weather, he would frequent the mall in Ames.

Memorial services for Kent are scheduled for Friday, May 25, 2018, at1:30 pm at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater, Iowa, with Pastor Heidi Williams presiding. There will be a reception immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall. Please take time to share some of your memories and stories with Kent’s family. As his family, we wish to thank each person who was a part of Kent’s life and brought him joy.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater, Iowa, or to a charity of your choice.
