Kenneth Brandt, age 85, of Story City and formerly of Hubbard, IA, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, IA.
Kenneth Frederick (Kenny) Brandt was born March 28, 1932 to Ernest and Edna (Rieks) Brandt at the Fred Rieks home place southwest of Hubbard, IA. He passed away on Monday, January 22, 2018 at the Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines, IA with his family by his side.
Kenny attended grade school at Grant #9 in Hardin County. He graduated from Radcliffe High School in 1949. Many times, he recalled walking / running the 12 miles home from baseball practice with this brother, Glen, and then having to do their chores when they got home.
On February 28, 1951, Kenny was united in marriage to Janice Laidley at the Zion United Church of Christ parsonage in Hubbard, IA. They lived on the Brandt family farm south of Hubbard. There they raised four daughters, Peggy, Kathaleen, Sandra and Kay Jean.
Kenny spent his life as a farmer and steward of the land. He also worked for the ASCS office of the USDA in various positions for over 30 years and as a mechanic for Held John Deere in Hubbard, IA, Sorenson John Deere in Union, IA and New Farms in rural Nevada, IA. He also worked for Wildeboer Farms, Zearing, IA doing seasonal field work. Kenny was elected and served for many years as the Grant township director.
His hobbies included roller skating at the Ritland Roller Rink, tractor pulling, hunting and fishing, camping with family and friends, dancing and local history. In the 1980's he attained a pilot's license and flew an ultra-lite plane that he and his brother, Glen, built.
Kenny is survived by his wife Janice of Story City, IA; four daughters Peggy (Jim) Spaid of Garden City, IA, Kathy Houck of Radcliffe, IA, Sandy (Jack) Miller of Iowa Falls, IA and Kay (James) Landis of Dickeyville, WI. Three grandchildren, Renae (Andrew) Morrison, Ryan (Ashley) Houck and Jami (Ryan) Stupp. Two step grandchildren, Jody (Steve) Webb and Tim (Candy) Miller. Six great-grandsons, Tucker, Cy and Bryce Houck, Mathias and Malachi Stupp and Alex Morrison. Five step great-grandchildren, Chelsea (Jake) Rouse, Allie (Andy) Gray, Tesa Webb, Jake Webb and Nick Miller. Three step great-great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Evelyn and Margo Rouse. One sister, Elaine Davis, one sister-in-law Arlene Brandt and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Edna Brandt, and by his brothers, Merlin Brandt and Glen Brandt.
