Obituary From Mitchell Funeral Home, Marshalltown, Marshall County, Iowa.

Katherine Buchwald, longtime Marshalltown resident, most recently of Ames and Story City, departed this earthly life after being here three days short of 96 years. Her life was full of laughter and love and it was time to go see her friends and family above.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 18th, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. She will be laid to rest in the Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be held one-hour prior to the services. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. Ph. 641-844-1234.

Born Katherine Lucy Morrison on November 14th, 1921, in Marshalltown, she was the daughter of Glen Perry and Lucy Pauline (Klaas) Morrison. Katherine graduated from the Marshalltown High Schools Class of 1939.

A young man by the name of Walter Pete Buchwald caught her eye one day while he delivered for Ward Lumber. He received the name Pete because the neighbor said he looked much more like a Pete than a Walter. Soon after, he came to a diner across from the courthouse where Katherine was working. He was there to pick up her co-worker for a date. Katherine firmly stated to her co-worker- Hands off Gladys, youre not going out with him. I am going to marry that man! She kept her promise to Gladys and the two were united in marriage on January 18th, 1941. They lived in Marshalltown at her home located at 404 South 1st Street where she was a loving wife and mother who was able to raise the kids until they were in junior high. At that time, she began working at the Newsstand on North 1st Avenue for numerous years - befriending many in the central Iowa area. Even though that was her job, her profession was entering contests- winning many of them from a sailboat and trailer, cruises and $20K from Kraft foods.

Never without a smile and laughter in her day, she enjoyed life to the fullest. It was a great day for her if family and friends were involved. You could guarantee they would be there if she made her glazed donuts or angel food cake. She kept her friends for a lifetime and was not hesitant about trying new adventures in life.

Left to cherish her memory are her children- Diana (Larry) Nichols of Marshalltown and Guy (Liz) Buchwald of Ames whom she made her home with for a number of years prior to living at Bethany Manor in Story City; 12 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; her half-sister Alline Roberts of Ames and numerous cousins, friends and acquaintances.

In death, Katherine rejoined her beloved Pete, her parents, daughter Connie Beaty and two grandsons- Larry Joe Nichols and Daniel Nichols.
