Helen Joann Carpenter

Joann Carpenter was born on August 7th 1928, to Gaylord and Millie (Sydnes) Carpenter in Story City, Iowa, and passed away peacefully at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames on November 25th, 2017 at 89 years of age.

Joann was baptized, confirmed, and grew up in the Elim Lutheran Church in Randall, Iowa. In 1946, she graduated from Roland High School. Joann then moved to Des Moines, Iowa, and worked for Bankers Life Insurance for 7 years. In 1953, she moved to Denver, Colorado, where she attended Metro State University and worked for American National Bank for 7 years. Joann spent the next 20 years working as a case manager at Fort Logan Mental Health, which she retired from in 1991. After retirement, Joann was a faithful volunteer for the Denver Museum of Natural History for many years. She returned to Story City in 2012 and resided at Timberland Village, where she enjoyed reconnecting with old friends.

Joann loved nature, the mountains, hiking, and traveling the world with her long time travel companions and cousins Robert and Winifred Peterson. They saw many sights in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Holy Land, just to name a few. Joann was a long time member of Our Savior Lutherans Church in Denver, Colorado and most recently a member of St. Petri Lutheran Church in Story City.

Joann was preceded in death by her parents, Gaylord and Millie Carpenter; sister, Delores Pittman; brother-in-law, Jerry Pittman; and sister-in-law, Jean Carpenter. She is survived by her brother, Gary Carpenter, Roland; nieces, Pam (Randy) Miller, Truman, MN, Debbie (Harry) Hale, Fairmont, MN, Sheila (Craig) Breitbarth, Truman, MN, Kim (Jamie) Peterson, Ankeny; nephew, Kevin (Michelle) Carpenter, Story City, and many more great nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers please make memorials to Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Bethany Life in Story City, or St. Petri Lutheran Church in Story City.
