Melvin Jesse Nutt, age 77, of Ames, Iowa peacefully passed away on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at Green Hills Health Care Center in Ames with family by his side. Melvin's wishes were granted as his body was donated to further the medical education and research mission at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. A private burial of the cremains will take place at a later date.

A Visitation will be held from 5-7pm on Friday, November 3, 2017 at Stevens Memorial Chapel (607 28th St., Ames, IA 50010) and a Celebration of Life will take place at 11am on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at Stevens Memorial Chapel.

Melvin was born on April 30, 1940 in Boone, Iowa to Jesse and Verna (Kreutner) Nutt. Melvin grew up near Luther on a farm, graduated from United Community High School in 1958, attending Boone Junior College and then went on to Iowa State University graduating in 1962 with a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering.

Melvin met the love of his life Beverly Freeborn on a blind date, attending an Andy Williams concert at the Iowa State Fair. The couple was married on September 24, 1966 in Grinnell, Iowa. Melvin and Beverly were blessed with two daughters.

Melvin was employed by the Iowa Department of Transportation for 39 years as a road design engineer. During his career he served on a task force which led to opportunities for Melvin and Beverly to travel across the US.

Melvin's engineering background was useful when taking the leap to build a new home. His particular and precise skills led to a beautiful home. He loved to know how things worked and if he could fix or repair the item.

Melvin and Beverly showed their support for ISU by attending various sporting events, basketball and volleyball being some of Melvin's favorites. Melvin enjoyed, golfing, bowling, gardening, working in the yard, attending the Iowa State Fair, watching baseball, and playing card games with family and friends.

He treasured his time spent over coffee with the retirees from the DOT as well as his 1966 Corvette and the time he spent with his family and friends.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents and nephew Mickey Freeborn.

Melvin is survived by his wife, Beverly; two daughters, Teresa (Jeff) Erdman of Nevada, Iowa, and Stacey (Dave) Ross of Ames, Iowa; two sisters, Ilene Mustapha of Davenport, Iowa, and Mary Ann (Gaylord) Swanson of Ames, Iowa; two brothers-in-law, Terry (Judy) Freeborn of Grinnell, Iowa, and Dennis (Nancy) Freeborn of Anchorage, Alaska; and several nieces and nephews.
