LuVerne Wicks, 91, of Ames and formerly of McCallsburg, passed away on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at Green Hills Care Center in Ames, Iowa. He was surrounded by his loving family. A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 7, 2017 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada, Iowa. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 8, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada, Iowa with Pastor David Burling officiating. Burial will follow in the Roland Cemetery in Roland, Iowa.

LuVerne was born in Hamilton County, Iowa on March 4, 1926 to Lars and Anna Mae (Olson) Wicks. He grew up around Roland/Randall and attended country school in Rural Roland. After school LuVerne began farming with his family. In 1945 he joined the Army and served abroad during the WWII. After the war he returned home to Iowa. In 1946 his brother took him to a basketball game where he saw a young Mary Morris playing. He later asked her for a date and she said yes. On February 28, 1948 the couple was united in marriage in Ames, Iowa. The couple lived in the Ames area until 1964 when they moved to a farm west of McCallsburg. LuVerne and Mary farmed that land until he retired from farming in 1992. The couple moved off of the farm and to Story City in 2012.

Over the years LuVerne was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Roland, Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg, and Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada. He was also a member of the McCallsburg American Legion Post #334.

LuVerne passion in life was farming. He also enjoyed: mowing and keeping his yard pristine, spending time with his family, traveling with Mary, telling jokes, and having coffee with his buddies.

Those left to cherish his loving memory are his wife of 69 years Mary Wicks; daughters Dee (Gene) Johnson and Beth (Jeff) Lott; grandchildren Shawn (Anne) Johnson, Eric (Jen) Johnson, and Aaron (Katie) Lott; great-grandchildren Connor, Quinn, Sophia, Ava, Henry, Avery, and Brynn; sisters Amy Swenson and Marie Baarson; brothers Lamonte Wicks and Bob (Marelyn) Wicks; brother-in-law Dan (Linda) Morris; sister-in-laws Betty Morris and Ann Wicks.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Marijo Hansen; sisters Esther Wicks, Marjorie Eide, and Charlotte Meimann; brother Henry Wicks; brother-in-laws Si Swenson, Paul Baarson, Ken Eide, Jerry Morris, and Gerald Meimann; and sister-in-law Mavis Wicks.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada, Iowa.

Fredregill Funeral Home in Zearing has been entrusted with the care of LuVerne and his family.
