Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Frank Bruce Johnston
October 22, 1934 - September 14, 2017

Frank B. Johnston of Ames died unexpectedly at his home Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017. He was 82.

The son of Frank L. and Mildred M. Johnston, he was born and raised in Fort Dodge, where he worked at his father's gas station and car dealerships, made lifelong friends and was a standout athlete. After receiving both his bachelor's degree and law degree from the University of Iowa, he went on to join the Ames firm of Hegland & Newbrough. He married Judith Conlin of Fort Dodge in 1964 and they had two children, Anne and Sam.

Frank, who at one point served as an assistant Story County attorney and later as the attorney for the Ames school district, retired in 2004. In retirement, he enjoyed good coffee, good jazz, PBS and the Swedish meatballs from Hy-Vee. Until just a few years ago, he could often be seen taking long walks throughout his neighborhood in north Ames.

Predeceased by his parents and older sister, Barbara, Frank is survived by daughter Anne of Bloomfield, N.Y.; son Sam and daughter-in-law Carol of Wheaton, Ill; grandchildren Maddie, Kate, Ben and Jack; nephews Scott, Jeff and Jim Summey; his former wife, good friends, and last but not least, his beloved cat, Molly.

Frank was the most humble, selfless and generous man his children have ever known. With a strong sense of what was right and just, as well as an exceptional level of integrity, he reminded them both of Atticus Finch from “To Kill a Mockingbird.” He also had a wonderful, often self-deprecating sense of humor and a true fondness for animals.

While Frank would be the first person to tell you he wasn’t perfect, he was pretty damn close. Above all, he always made sure his children and grandchildren felt loved and knew how important they were to him.

He will be greatly missed and while his family is respecting his wish that no funeral be held, they would be grateful to hear from old friends, neighbors, colleagues and clients who may wish to share their memories via johnstongirls88@gmail.com or 22 Maple Ave., Bloomfield NY 14469.

Donations in Frank’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
