Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Virgil Fredrick Fay Calkins, 69, of Huxley went to his final resting place September 7, 2017 while at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Visitation will be held Monday September 11, 2017 from 10am to 11am. Funeral will follow at 11am, followed by a luncheon all at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Huxley.

Virgil was born May 22, 1948 in Iowa City to Lewis and LaVonne (Schrader) Calkins. He grew up in Vinton with his family. He graduated from Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock High School in 1968. He married Julie Ann Fuller August 4, 1970. He was an Army Veteran of the Vietnam War and served from 1970 to 1972. He worked at the VA of Knoxville and Woodward State Hospital for 25+ years. He took pride in his work, but was most of all was proud of his family. He had a passion for helping others and loved animals. He enjoyed playing cards over the years, dancing with his wife, listening to country music, and loved watching westerner movies/shows. John Wayne was his favorite. Virgil was a plain and simple man with a lot of love in his heart.

He is survived by his wife, Julie of Huxley; daughter, Amelia (Shawn) Mathis of Slater; two grandchildren, Conner and Riley Mathis of Slater; a sister, Jane (Mark) Koch of Sargent Bluff, IA; two brothers, Dennis (Kay) Calkins of Mason City and Douglas Swanson of Olds, IA; mother-in-law, Irene Fuller of Story City; sister-in-law, Rebecca (Mark) Chandler of Greeley, CO; and a brother-in-law, Fred (Julie) Fuller of Ankeny.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law, Donald Fuller, and son, Aaron Dean Calkins.
