From Nevada Representative October 26, 1915 (front page)
The Cedar Rapids Republican of this morning reports the death at an early hour today of Col. H. H. Rood of Mt. Vernon. The Republican report is that he died at State Center where he had been taken seriously ill. This mornings Register and Leader reports him seriously ill, following an operation and indicates that he has been at home. The two reports do not harmonize at to details; but there is corroboration between the earlier report of his serious illness and the later one of his death. The news will be received in this county with very great regret. Col. Rood came to Nevada as a young man in the latter '50s, taught school around here, went to Mt. Vernon to school, enlisted there and ultimately married and settled there after the war; but in all the intervening years he had been in Nevada with varying frequency, and his prominence in the affairs of the state has been such that all of his old friends have easily kept track of him. His age is understood to have been 73. Mrs. Rood died some two years ago, and their one daughter in married and living in Arizona.
