OBITUARY

Eva Margaret Getz was born in Germany April 2nd 1826 and died at her home just north of Colo October 1st 1912 aged 86 years and six months. When she was but four years-old her mother died leaving her to the care of an older sister. Then she was 14 her father died. In 1852 Miss Getz with a party of young friends came to America. On arriving she fully realized what if means to be a stranger in a strange land, unable to speak the English language without relative and the only familiar faces those of the friends who came with her and who were as much strangers as she. The people in this county were kind and she soon made many warm friends. She settled in Illinois and in 1859 was married to Anthony Hicks at Ottawa, Ill. In 1877 they moved to the farm just north and east of Colo which is still the family home. Mr. Hicks died in 1888. Mrs. Hicks was a loyal member of the Lutheran church, but felt kindly toward all Christian religions, and when distance prevented her attending her own church, she worshiped at a nearer church regardless of denominational difference. Three children survive to mourn her loss, two sons and one daughter, William, J. F. and Ella who all remain at home. Also one niece who lives in [Milburn?] besides friends and neighbors.
