OBITUARY

MRS. JENNIE BRIGGS

Mrs. Jennie Briggs, widow of the late Otis Briggs died at her home in Los Angeles Tuesday, June 22, 1914, after a protracted illness. She was born near Philadelphia April 5, 1845 and was at her death aged 69 years, 2 months and 18 days. She had been in very poor health for much of the past year and for several weeks her condition had bee known to be critical. Her death, therefore, though it occasions much regret brings no surprise. With her in her last days and weeks were he son Otis and family, and Otis was to start east with her body to day. He is due here early Monday morning, and the funeral will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at two-thirty o'clock fro the residence of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Dutton in this city. The interment will be beside her late husband in the Nevada cemetery.

Mrs. Briggs was born Jennie Allen, and she first came to Nevada ass girl about 1860, accompanying her parents who for couple of years conducted the "National" hotel, and as it then was on the Lowrey corner. Later the family moved to Rising Sun and thence to Des Moines, where she finished her schooling. Her elder half-sister was the first Mrs. Otis Briggs, and after the sister's death Miss Jennie was married to Mrs. Briggs, about 1867 or 1868. The marriage was in Nevada, and here Mrs. Briggs resided for the most of her married life. Mr. Briggs died in December, 1903, and about a year before that time Mr. and Mrs. Briggs had begun sojourning in southern California. After Mr. Briggs' death Mrs. Briggs continued more or less in California and after some years came to regard herself as a resident there, returning, however, to Nevada for occasional and protracted visits. Mrs. Briggs had three children, Lida (Mrs. J. G. Dutton,) Otis F. and Clarence. The last named died as a young man in 1908. Otis F. has had his home for quite a number of years at Orange, California, and Mrs. Dutton occupies the ancestral home here.

Mrs. Briggs was a woman of much capability and worth, and she had a wide circle of warm and sincere friends. In all her active years she was surrounded by plenty, and in her later years she enjoyed the blessings of wealth. In this situation her attitude was never selfish, but she wished others to have the same enjoyment of life that she had. She was a good and admirable woman, who will be deeply mourned.
