Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Our music died June 11, 2017, with the passing of our mother. Dorothy Mae Lindberg Budolfson, 99, passed away June 11, 2017, in Ames, Iowa. Memorial services will be at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, July 8 at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Ames. Burial was in the Graceland area at Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Dorothy was born August 6, 1917, on a farm south of Odebolt, Iowa. She attended rural school there until her parents moved to California to help her grandparents run a family service station and grocery store. She returned to Iowa, graduating in the Odebolt High School Class of 1934. She attended Iowa Teachers College (UNI). Her first teaching job was at Wheeler No. 5, a one room school located near the family farm. Dorothy taught during the winter and attended college in the summer, earning one, two and four year teaching certifications and eventually a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Music. After teaching briefly in Randall, Iowa, she moved to Ames in 1943 to teach elementary school and to conduct music classes at Welch and Crawford schools. She was a Past President of the Ames Education Association and retired from Sawyer Elementary School in 1982 after 38 years in the classroom.

On April 8, 1951, Dorothy married Chris Budolfson. The couple met at the College Savings Bank where Chris worked and where Dorothy did her banking. Chris liked to joke that he asked Dorothy out because she knew how to balance her checkbook. Dorothy was devoted to Chris and they were happily married for 44 years.

Dorothy was active in church and community. Highlights included directing the junior choir at Collegiate Presbyterian Church, organizing the Community Chest campaign for West Ames, engaging in P.E.O. Chapter IV and the education sorority ADK and serving on the Advisory Board at Green Hills Retirement Community. Her love of music continued late in life and she regularly sang and played the piano for events at Green Hills and elsewhere.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Chris Budolfson, parents Arthur and Hazel Lindberg, brother Dennis Lindberg and sister Jane Purcell.

She is survived by her daughter, Ann Budolfson Newburg; her son, Art Budolfson and his wife Marilyn; granddaughters Angella and Katherine Budolfson; and great-granddaughters, Elise and Monivette Budolfson.

Memorials may be sent directly to Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1416 20th Street, Ames, IA 50010.
