VayeJean (McQueen) Markhardt was born November 17, 1942 to Don and Lucille (Curl) McQueen in Plankinton, South Dakota. Vaye, as she was more commonly known, graduated from White Lake High School in 1961, and then married the love of her life, James Markhardt from Mitchell, S.D., on April 29, 1961. The two were married for 56 wonderful years. James and Vaye moved from South Dakota to Huxley in 1970 where she resided until her passing. Vaye worked at Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing (3-M) for 33 years before retiring in 2006. Vaye’s love for cooking, gardening, sunshine, and weekend gatherings with friends at the Knoxville Speedway were among her many interests.
Vaye passed away unexpectedly at 74 years of age on May 22, 2017 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.
Vaye is survived by her husband, James; her sons, Kim of Weatherford, Texas and Kevin (Sharon) of Montgomery, Texas; two grandchildren, Nicklaus and Melissa, both of Atlanta, Ga.; her sister, Marilyn (Les) VandenBos of Sturgis, S.D.; and her brothers, Richard (Judy) McQueen and Randy (Lenee) McQueen, all of White Lake, S.D.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Burial of her cremated remains will be in Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell, S.D. at a later date.
