From Stevens Memorial Chapel obituary, Ames, Story County, Iowa:
John Frederick Love went home to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, April 22, 2017. A visitation will be held from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at Stevens Memorial Chapel (607 28th St., Ames, IA 50010). Funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 27, 2017 following the visitation.
Born December 13, 1929 in Wilmar, California, John was the eldest of two sons born to Edwin M. and Mary June (Leedy) Love. As a child he was pictured in Popular Science and Popular Mechanics in articles written by his father. He graduated from Antelope Valley High School in 1947, attended Bethel College (now University) in St. Paul, Minnesota, and then enlisted in the United States Air Force.
While in the Air Force, John met Mittie Ann Harris in Washington, D.C. at the Victory Man's Service Center. They were married in November, 1955 and were married just over 60 years until Mittie's death in January, 2016.
After his honorable discharge from the Air Force, John began working for the National Animal Disease Center in Beltsville, Maryland. He moved his family to Iowa when the lab relocated to Ames and continued working there until his retirement in 1989. Even after retirement he enjoyed the lab potlucks in the park.
John had a strong faith in Jesus Christ. He was happy to share his faith with others and to see his children's and grandchildren's faith in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior. He enjoyed spending time with his family and was proud of their accomplishments. He loved being outdoors. Until the last couple of years he took long walks every day. He loved animals and birds and had a number of interesting pets over the years, from the American Kestrel he had as a boy to Snowball, the Samoyed who was his companion on all those long walks for several years. When his children were young he raised a number of red-tailed hawks.
John was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother, and an infant son. He is survived by four children: Mary Ann Love, Charles (Betsy) Love (Ankeny), Grace (Don) Morrow (Black Creek, Wisconsin), and Sarah Jane Love (Riverside, IL). He is also survived by six grandchildren: Jenny Love; Charles and David Love; and Carolyn, Benjamin, and Amanda Morrow.
