Richard Lyle VanLangen was born on December 9, 1936 in Hamilton county to Benhard and Ethelyn (Richardson) VanLangen. He graduated from Kamrar High School in 1955 and started farming with his father. Rich also had a corn shelling and trucking business. He met June Stuhmer at Gilligan’s restaurant in Webster City where she was a waitress. They were married on May 26, 1957 and moved to the family farm in Ellsworth, which was homesteaded by his ancestors in 1858 and is now a designated Heritage Farm. He also has two designated Century Farms. In addition to working the family farm, he raised cattle and hogs and sold Funk G Hybrid seed corn. He was also co-manager at Jewell Distributing with June for many years. Rich was on the Ellsworth/Williams Telephone Co-op board, the Jewell Golf Course board and the Ellsworth Telephone Co-op board. After retiring in 1996, he continued to help on the family farm, where he enjoyed running the combine, and also helped at Grandma June’s Café, where June was his boss. Some of Rich’s favorite activities included golf, hosting cream can feeds for friends and family and eating breakfast at Hardee’s every morning.
