OBITUARY

DEATH OF CYNTHIA O. DUFF.

Mrs. Cynthia O. Duff, one of the worthiest among the prioneers of this county, died Sunday, May 5, 1907, at the county farm in the 88th year of her age. Mrs. Duff was born in New York, or at least had her early home there, and grew to womanhood at Syracuse. We have not so very much of her story but when the Northwestern railroad was built through this county she and her husband, Alexander Duff, were living near the present site of Ames and thirty years and or ago they were residents of Nevada. She was reared to comparative wealth, and at one time after they came to live in this county was quite well-to-do. She was the second wife of Mr. Duff and had no children of her own, but his children and grandchildren she mothered, as she did nearly everyone about her for whom there was any occasion for her to manifest a kindly interest. In her later years her property slipped away from her in one way and another, until finally a home at the county farm seemed to those who knew and cared for her the best practicable arrangement. There could be none, however, to say that she had not in years gone by well earned the consideration that the county was paying to her, and her residence there was not justly to be counted of the charitable order. Among her early works in the county was the contribution of money and much effort toward the establishment of the Congregational church in Ames, and of that church she was one of the principal founders. Her funeral will be conducted from the church on Tuesday.
