OBITUARY
MRS. T. P. CHILD.
Mrs. Thomas P. Child, of Union township, died December 3 at Mount St. Rose hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, and was buried December 6 at Lyons in this state, near which place was her first home in Iowa. The given and maiden name of the deceased was Kate Grohe, and she was born in the town of Wilna, Jefferson county, New York, March 25, 1845. With her parents she same in 1861 to Clinton county, Iowa and there she was married February 17, 1864, to Mr. Child, who was a native of Philadelphia, also in Jefferson county, New York, and who had come to Clinton county, Iowa in 1863. Mr. and Mrs. Child continued to reside in Clinton county, Iowa until 1870, when they came to Story county and in this county has been their family home ever since. They lived on their farm for six years and then came to Nevada, where they lived in the Fegtly homestead on Oak street. During the seven years they live where Mr. Child was for the most part running a meat market; and Mrs. Child became identified with most of the social enterprises that are apt to engage the interest of a capable and energetic woman. They returned to the farm in the early '80s, and there have since resided. Mrs. Child had been in bad health for the past six years and had been forced for the most part to spend her winters in localities where the climate is milder. She had bronchial trouble, culminating in consumption, which was the ultimate cause of her death. Mrs. Child leaves her husband, her three children, the sons Oliver and Lyle being in St. Louis, and the daughter Winora, Mrs. John Fay, with the Flora De Voss dramatic company. Her other near relatives are a brother in Oregon and five sisters in this state.
