Mrs. Belle Jondall, aged pioneer woman, passed away at an early hour last Monday morning, June 1, at the home of her sister, Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Chader, at Slater. In failing health for several months, she had been bedfast since the 16th of March. Last week she had failed rapidly and her death on Monday morning had been anticipated.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon, from the Chader home at 1:30 and the Bethlehem church at 2:00 with Rev. E. R. Rorem in charge. He was assisted by Rev. David Munson of the M. E. Church. Services at the home were brief. Rev. Munson sang a solo, “The Garden of Prayer,” while Rev. Rorem read scripture passages and led in prayer.

At the church, Rev and Mrs. Munson opened the services with a vocal duet, “I Know My Savior Cares,” after which Rev. Munson led in devotion. A vocal solo, “The Twenty-third Psalm,” was rendered by Mrs. M. S. Heggen. The sermon by Rev. Rorem followed. He took his text from the second chapter of Ephesians, 18th to 21st, “Members of God’s Household.” A vocal solo, “The Gospel Four-Square,” was sung by Rev. Munson, closing the brief but impressive service.

Beautiful floral tributes covered the casket. There were also gifts to the missions in Mrs. Jondall’s memory. Included was a purse, contributed by a large number of neighbors and friends. Also a sum from the Bethlehem Ladies’ Aid, of which she had been a long, faithful member.

Pallbearers were Charley Skortman, Tom Rawson, Nels Sabo, Andrew Maland, M. S, Heggen and Art Mays. Burial was made in the Jondall family lot in the Slater cemetery.

Obituary

Belle Arntz Jondall, daughter of Malinda and Simon Arntz, was born in Prairie Du Chien, Wis., Jan.30, 1855, and died June 1, 1942, at the home of her sister, Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Chader, at Slater at the age of 87 years and four months.

Her parents moved to Iowa in 1857, taking up their residence with the colony of residents that had settled southeast of what is now the town of Huxley, in 1855. They bought a farm east of the Fieldberg church where the Arntz family lived for many years and where Belle grew to womanhood.

Her marriage to Henry Jondall of Story City was solemnized in 1874. They lived for a brief time in the Fieldberg community when he moved to Des Moines where he worked as a carpenter. With the advent of Slater, they located here in the eighties where Mrs. Jondall lived the rest of her life.

Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Jondall--Erbelle, Eddie and Mary, all of whom preceded her in death, as well as her husband, who died in 1926. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. A. A. Chader of Slater, a great-grand-daughter, Mrs. Blanche Heavenston of Oakland, Cal., and one great-great-grand-daughter, also of Oakland, as well as several nephews and nieces and many friends who cherish her memory.

Mrs. Jondall was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church at an early age and remained a loyal Christian member all the days of her life, ever faithful to her Redeemer and Saviour. For the past fifteen years, she had made her home with her sister, Mrs. A. A. Chader, where she met with every kindness and consideration and was happy. Through her fatal illness she had every care and died as she had wished--by sleeping away. “Aunt Belle,” as she was known to her loved ones as well as the whole community, will be remembered by all who knew her, as a loving neighbor and friend and a faithful Christian.

SUBMITTER’S NOTE: Simon Arntz (Simon Trondson Arnevik) and Malinda (Malene Larsdotter Vårå) both married other people in Norway in April 1854 before emigrating. Simon’s first wife was Ingeborg Rasmusdotter Kolbeinshaug and likely gave birth to
Belle. Simon and Malinda married in April 1855 after Belle was born. Malinda had previously given birth to her first-born child Andrew Thompson in December 1854. In the early Fjeldberg church records in Iowa, the Arntz family is listed but Belle is called Ingeborg, a name frequently replaced by Isabelle in America. Belle’s birthplace is given as Wisconsin only in this obituary and the 1900 U.S. census. In all other census records from 1860 on, her birthplace is listed as Illinois. The family spent time in Eastman Township, Crawford County, Wisconsin, near Prairie du Chien, where Thomas was born in 1857 and Simon received a land patent in 1858. Malinda’ sister-in-law Martha Stackland and brother-in-law Amos Thompson had settled in Eastman Township earlier. The Arntz family and Amos Thompson moved to Story County by 1860.
