Shirley Ann Buck was born April 8, 1939 to Ruth (Sweeney) and K. Stanley Buck in Newton, Massachusetts. She graduated from Averill Park High School in 1957 and attended Wellesley College, majoring in Chemistry. While attending Wellesley, Shirley met her future husband, Stanley A. Williams, a graduate student in Physics at Rensselear Polytechnic Institute (RPI). They were married on June 22, 1958.
Following Stan's graduation from RPI and honorable discharge from military service in the summer of 1962, the Williams' moved to England for Stan's post-doctoral work. Upon returning to the United States in 1964, they moved to Ames where Stan joined the faculty of the Physics Department at Iowa State University.
Shirley's hobbies included crossword puzzles, Sudoku, and numerous other name and number puzzles. Shirley also enjoyed knitting and needlepoint. Shirley and Stan grew vegetables and fruit in their garden for many years.
Shirley passed away at 77 years of age on March 17, 2017 at Woodlands Creek Active Living Community in Clive.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Connie (Tom) Hilts of Ames; her son, Mark Williams of New York; her sister, Dawn (Michael) Castaldi of West Chester, Pa.; two brothers, Dennis Buck of West Sand Lake, N.Y. and Irwin Buck of Toms River, N.J.; her granddaughters, Kristin (Bill) Uknes of Clive, Milly (Todd) Versteegh of Oxford and Hilary (Andrew) Williams of Tiffin; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death and her parents and her husband, Stan.
